The majority of dentists practicing BOST have mature practices. As a result, they have had the opportunity to try a variety of approaches for different cases. They are then able to draw on this experience to determine the cases in which BOST would be more effective than existing treatments. This experience has also given the dentists the opportunity to work with other non-surgical techniques, such as lasers, and ultrasonics to be familiar with their benefits and limitations. As such, they are able to confidently recommend BOST as the primary non-surgical option.
Dentists well suited for BOST are proponents of non-surgical treatments. Since the treatment offers an alternative to surgery, Dentists must view surgery as a last resort as opposed to the standard treatment.
The majority of successful BOST practitioners also have a tremendous amount of focus. Because the treatment can take up to five hours, a great deal of attention to detail and presence of mind is needed.
Dentists find BOST more intellectually stimulating than working on the roots alone. Working with BOST has also had a big impact upon the dentists' practices. BOST allows them to see fewer patients, work fewer hours and gain more satisfaction in what they are doing. In many cases, dentists have hired associates to do fillings, routine root canals, and other treatments that free them to do the increased number of periodontal cases.
The majority of new BOST patients come from within the dentist's existing practice. Some patients are also referred from other dentists working in the same practice. Most patients arrive with a chief complaint such as pain, swelling, or bleeding. Often symptom-less cases are detected during a check-up.
AirPerio offers a Certificate Course in the BOST Treatment. Dentists are trained in limited numbers on a case-by-case basis. To complete the certificate competency program requires treating successfully at least 20 cases of moderate to severe periodontitis. The duration of the course ideally is about 5-6 months with 4 cases treated once per month over two days. Course content includes:
