DOES MY GUM LOOK BIG IN THIS?
Many teeth could be saved from extraction by a non-invasive technique that could benefit the whole body.
Periodontal disease begins when a drop in immune-system effectiveness allows aggressive anaerobic bacteria to multiply in the space under the gingival tissue around the teeth. As well as causing degeneration of the dental bone and gums, these bacteria could also be a contributory factor in heart disease, strokes, osteoporosis and a range of other fatality causing conditions.
Respiratory and sinus infections, arthritis, ulcers, premature births and infertility all stem from unhealthy gums. Now US periodontal therapist Dr William Hoisington has developed a procedure that he believes can prevent these dis- eases by saving the teeth and gums. His technique, called Tri-Immuno Phasic (TIP) periodontal therapy, allows dentists to go under the gums and destroy these bacteria--without surgery. "This procedure promotes gum and bone healing and regeneration and has proved successful in thousands of cases," he says. "Not only are loose teeth saved by being bound back to the newly regenerated gum and bone, toxins from the bacteria are no longer entering the body and having a negative effect on our health."
Dr Hoisington developed the periodontology technique while with an implant research group at the University of Nice in the south of France.
Periodontal disease is being widely recognized now as having a profound effect on general health. The Hale Clinic in London is known worldwide for its leadership position in complimentary medicine. There are seventy five practitioners at the clinic who see 5000 patients per month for everything from Accupuncture to Aryuvedic, Naturopathic to exotic cutting edge treatments. Princess Diana was a patient here and her husband Charles the Prince of Wales inagurated the clinic in 1987. Statistically more than 15 % of those 5000 patients will have moderate to advanced periodontal disease that may impact any treatment being received. A program of training has begun for Hale practitioners to teach them periodontal diagnosis and use of the DNA test for pathologic bacteria. One M.D. physician wanted to have the test done on himself (his father had lost all his teeth to periodontal disease) and he was struggling with hypertension. The DNA results surprised him in that it showed the presence of 9 periodontal pathogens including the most aggressive ones. He was happy to get this treated and then be more effective for his own patients. Dr. Yvan Micholt of Brussels has completed an 18 month training program in Tri-Immuno-Phasic (TIP) treatment with BOST and has started treating patients at the clinic. Dr. Michael Rosen is a consultant and referral source from the clinic for restorative and cosmetic dentistry , and mercury filling removal.
Starting in July of 2005 AirPerio was asked to help solve a mystery involving some 20 cardiology patients. These patients had severe symptoms of coronary artery problems without having any of the normal risk factors i.e. smoking, diet, high cholesterol, family history, stress etc. A pilot study of 10 of these patients was undertaken. Each patient was examined for signs and symptoms of periodontal disease and each had performed a DNA test for pathologic bacteria as well as a genetic susceptibility test for periodontal disease. During the examination of each patient the treating cardiologist was trained in how to examine and diagnose periodontal disease and how to administer the DNA test. This proved very interesting as by the 6th patient the cardiologist was making accurately the diagnosis and being very excited to have the ability to do the exam and test on future patients. After all were examined we tallied up the results. Of the 10 , nine had severe periodontal disease. Very surprising to the cardiologist was that some of these patients had been seeing a dentist regularly and the diagnosis had been missed. The patients were also very surprised but also encouraged that the periodontal disease might be at least a partial answer to the mystery of their symptoms. When the DNA test results came back they confirmed the clinical picture and pointed to the appropriateness of BOST therapy since one of the main pathogens often implicated in the periodontal-cardiology connection, was found in most of the patients. Every patient was positive for the genetic susceptibility to periodontal disease. This could possibly be a way to determine risk for heart problems and lead to early preventive intervention because statistically some of these cardiac patients could be expected to have heart attacks. Two patients have received the therapy and after a time a new DNA test will be performed and cardiac symptoms monitored to see if any positive changes result. Based on this preliminary study the cardiologist concluded that every patient should have a periodontal screening and DNA test if suggested by clinical signs. The cardiology section is considering expanding the study to 700 patients.
The International Atherosclerosis Symposium accepted our cardiology research paper. Meeting cardiologists from all over the world was inspiring as they asked good questions and demonstrated proof of their conviction that their patient's periodontal problems have to become their concern.
Dubai is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and was host in January, 2005 to the International Wellbeing Conference. AirPerio was invited to send speakers to the conference to tell the story of the relation of periodontal disease to heart disease of course but also the lesser known problems of infertility and premature birth.
One of the fun things in life is to spend a week in a warm place by the sea. Dubai is certainly that, located near the mouth of the Persian Gulf in the heart of the middle east. The Old City is a fascinating port and home to many cultures including a large population from India.
Implantologists from around the world came to learn the latest techniques with a new kind of implant that is fast gaining acceptance. Because the new Diskimplants are placed laterally and anchored into the dense cortical bone, they can be done where there is too little bone for conventional root form implants. This avoids risky hip bone grafts and invasion of implants into the sinuses. It also permits the teeth fixed to the implants to be put immediately into function for chewing and esthetics. This is a very pleasing benefit to patients conditioned to wait months and even years to get their teeth. The AirPerio part of the program presented to the implantologists the importance of bacterial DNA testing and aerobic periodontal preparation and maintenance. Cases were presented where saving teeth avoided the need for implants. Also presented was a case where implants already placed were failing. A DNA test revealed an infection with one of the aggressive anaerobic bacteria. Periodontal re-treatment and the addition of the appropriate antibiotics has stabilized the situation where conventional wisdom says these implants were surely lost. This technology is so attractive to avoid additional pre-implant surgery and to get the teeth immediately that several patients from Seattle have already gone to Nice to have the procedure done.
