AirPerio | A New Program To Treat Periodontal Gum Disease

AEROBIC ORAL HYGIENE

Brushing, flossing, and other conventional methods of dental hygiene cannot reach the source of periodontal disease: plaque (biofilm) and bacteria located deep under the gums. Created specifically to address cases of periodontal disease, the Aerobic Oral Hygiene Kit allows you to clean the area under your gums and eliminate the disease-causing bacteria all the way down to the attachment and into root concavities where brush and floss don't reach.

What is the Aerobic Oral Hygiene Kit?

AirPerio Kit

AirPerio Kit

The Kit consists of a handle called a "perio-aid" and a set of disposable hygienic points called "aeros" that fit into the end of the handle. A sleve screws up to hold the tips firmly in place.

How does it work?

The handle of the Aerobic Kit is held like a pencil. As you clean under the gums, the "aero" provides feedback on the condition of your attachment and the health of your gums. A lack of bleeding, a squeaky clean sound against your tooth, a firm attachment, and no plaque on the tip are all positive feedback.

What is the recommended use?

Your dentist will inform you how the system best fits into your treatment. Most often, the system will be used once or twice per day. At each follow up visit, you can ask questions and go over technique with your dentist.

Is the Kit difficult to use?

The Aerobic Oral Hygiene Kit is more complicated than a toothbrush. You need to be delicate and precise as you move from tooth to tooth. However, the process is fairly intuitive, like any new skill the key is practice and don't ever stop doing it!

Do I need to use other products in addition to the
Aerobic Oral Hygiene Kit?

Patients should keep brushing and flossing as they were before. Since BOST removes the infection in the mouth, BOST patients will not need to use disinfectants or chemicals after the treatment. If there is persistent bleeding, check with your dentist to make sure your technique is correct. Also, make sure you maintain your aerobic treatment after your gums heal. Doing so will ensure that your gums stay healthy and that you don't experience any more periodontal problems.

NUTRITION / LIFESTYLE

Nutrition is an essential aspect of maintaining a healthy immune system. AirPerio recommends the following after the treatment: Eat a balanced diet. Make sure your diet includes plenty of protein and a moderate intake of unsaturated fat. Eat regular meals. Busy people will often skip a meal. However, after five hours without food, the body anticipates starvation and begins to shut itself down. Non-essential activity that consumes energy is slowed down, tissue repair is put on hold, and detoxification activities get delayed. This is harmful to the body and slows
down the healing process.

Eat more Fruit

Eat more Fruit

Avoid excessive sugar and snacking. Avoid granular foods like nuts, seeds, chips, whole grain breads etc. for a couple weeks while the tissue seals up. Meat, fish, vegetables and seedless fruits, anything fibrous, is fine. Increase your intake of vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C and Zinc are the most important. Vitamin C can be found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat 5 servings of vegetable and 2 of fruit a day. Zinc can be found in dairy products, broccoli, dates, cereals, and apples. Supplement with calcium citrate, for better absorption, if necessary. About 1000 mg per day are required.

Avoid smoking if possible. Smoking promotes anaerobic conditions, slows down healing, reduces circulation, and depresses certain immune cells. Quitting smoking brings immune function back to normal and promotes aerobic conditions in 6 weeks. If you can't stop smoking, compensate as much as possible with extra emphasis on all the other positive actions in diet , exercise and hygiene. Expect more frequent maintenance visits.

Exercise regularly. Exercise increases circulation to bring in building blocks and oxygen to the tissues as well as the vitamins and minerals that permit proper uptake. Exercise can take many forms, even fast walking and climbing stairs several times a day can improve healing.
